Ambleside has been my go-to retreat for years, offering everything I crave in a quick getaway: breath-taking views, endless trails, and most importantly, exceptional food! I never run out of options for eating out in Ambleside – you have everything from flaky pastries to delightful sashimi, it’s truly a matter of mood and cravings.
Cafes in Ambleside:
- Mathilde’s Café: It’s no secret among my friends that a trip to the Lakes isn’t complete without indulging in coffee and cake at Mathilde’s. Their all-day offerings from breakfast to lunch to snacks are simply delightful. You can find Mathilde’s Café at the Heaton Cooper Studio in Grasmere – consider it a scenic 10-minutes bus ride from Ambleside or better yet, choose the 5-mile walk by Rydal and Grasmere lakes. Fun fact: There is only one lake actually in the Lakes, Bassenthwaite Lake. All the others are much smaller and so considered either “tarns”, “meres” or “waters”.
- Force Café: Boasting some of the best westward views in Ambleside, their covered terrace is perfect for any weather. Plus, they host an array of events from social meet-ups to yoga sessions. Force are also opened until later afternoon and on certain days, you can even have wood-fired pizzas on their terrace.
- Esquire Café: This longstanding café is exactly in Ambleside town centre. My favourite there is their three layers carrot cake. It’s legendary and an absolute a must-try for anyone visiting the area.
Restaurants in Ambleside:
- Don Itanoi: Think you can’t find authentic Thai in the Lakes? Think again! From classic pad thai to Bangkok bangers, they’ve got it all.
- Tap Yard: They’re not just about pizza; they’re about creating an experience with beer on tap and live sports screenings – what’s not to love?
- Ishaas: This family-run gem serves up Indian cuisine that’s as authentic as it gets, thanks to the culinary prowess of the founding brothers (which might not be Indian but know everything about it!).
Fine Dining in Ambleside:
- Lake Road Kitchen: I might be biased, but this restaurant is a love affair with British produce mixed with Italian and Asian influences. It’s an essential stop on any foodie’s journey.
- Old Stamp House: With a Michelin star to its name and a recent location upgrade, this sibling of Kysty continues to elevate its menu and dining experience.
- Forest Side: Just a 5-minute drive from Ambleside, they offer not just fine dining but also accommodation for those seeking a complete indulgence.
With four Michelin-starred restaurants and several others recommended by prestigious guides, this quaint Cumbrian village is a culinary hotspot that deserves every bit of its acclaim.
